Residency

Here is an update on obtaining Ikamets for members in Gocek. dated 28th September 2011

Ikamets

For Göcek residents, first you have to make sure you are on the census. The first stop is the Muktar's office facing the car park behind Yapi Kredi. The Muktar needs one passport photograph for each person (either one form per family or one each) and he needs to see all passports. He will complete the form. You need to sign it, get three photocopies and take them to the Jandarma. You may be asked to leave the forms and passports and collect later. Keep the original form and return a copy to the Muktar.
The rest of the process takes place in Fethiye. First go to the customs police at the entrance to Ege marina in Fethiye. They will give you two forms. One includes a list of what you need, you complete this by hand can get it stamped (see below). The second form has to be typed. They will also ask you to buy a special plastic folder to keep the documents in. You can get the folder in a little stationer's shop near Cem Optics.

What you need for each person:

§ Five passport photographs (of yourself that is)
§ Photcopies of your passport (the page with your details on it and the page which shows the date stamp of when you last entered Turkey
§ Photocopy of your Tapu or rental agreement
§ Photocopy of bank statement showing you have income and/or pension and/or savings (check internet for current details)
§ Kimlik bildirme belgesi (previously obtained from the Göcek Muktar)
§ Old Ikamet if applicable
§ Receipt of payment of fees (see below)

The process

First complete the application form from the customs police, which then has to be stamped by various people. As I said, people are very helpful; if you don't speak Turkish just show them the application form and they will know what you want.
First stop the government building (near the PTT). Go up to the first floor go to the end of the corridor turn left and go to the end of this corridor. You will see that the offices here have great views over Fethiye bay. In the last, very plush, office present your application for stamping.

Next stop across the road to the police building. Again show your application form and you will be directed to the front desk where a police officer will stamp your form.

Next stop the tax office. This is on road that cuts across from the main Calis – Migros road to the sea front. On the third floor again show your application form and tell them your Tax number. They will give you a number which you then take to the cash desk on the ground floor where you will pay the Ikamet fee. (This office closes 12.00 till 1.00, as do the customs police.)
Take all the documentation and the required number of photocopies. You have to get your application form typed and you can do this at an office across the road from the customs police (I'm afraid I can't remember the name of the office but it is a shipping agency, a small office. Ask anyone if you can't find it but if you are at the customs police you are very close) The people there will type your form for 15tl.
Return to the customs police with all the documentation, tax office receipt and 149TL to pay for the Ikamet book. They will check it and let you know if anything is missing. The forms no longer have to go to Mugla but are processed by the customs police. In June 2011 they were taking three weeks to process the form but in September 2011 this was down to 7 days.

If it is your first Ikamet, its start date will be the day before you entered the country on your tourist visa.

I must admit I love going on the dolmus to Fethiye and back. As you say, so often they will detour to take a passenger and his bags and boxes close to home - a truly local bus service. It always amazed me how the Turkish passengers all seem to know each other and even greet complete strangers like myself.

It looks as though the intial plans for Internet Filtering have been changed - part of an article from press today - 6th August 2011

"Turkish government makes changes to its heavily criticized Internet filtering plan by removing two of the filter packages and delaying the implementation date from Aug 22 to Nov 22. While a draft of the new system will be online for 10 days to receive feedback from the public, experts say there should be no filter

The Turkish government is amending its heavily criticized Internet filtering plan and delaying its implementation by three months in order to create a new infrastructure to support the change.

The implementation date has been pushed back from Aug. 22 to Nov. 22 and the number of filtering packages that will be offered has been reduced from four to two.

The modifications came following extensive meetings with nongovernmental organization representatives from all parts of Turkey in order to create a more acceptable system of Internet filters. A draft of the system is also available online for 10 days in order to receive feedback from the public.

The new system will offers two filters, "family" and "child," that will be provided to Internet users free of charge. Those who decide against using a filter will continue with their normal Internet access.

The initial system proposed that all Internet users in Turkey would have to choose among one of four Internet filtering packages, under a regulation by the Prime Ministry's Information and Communication Technologies Authority, or BTK."

Sell by Dates

I was sent the text below in an email from a good friend:

"The customs police caught a gang who is bringing out of date food products from UK and other European countries and rewriting their expiry dates. These products are on the shelf with legally imported ones and it is not possible to tell wich one is the normal one. There are Heinz products, pork sausages, bacon, cheese between them. Here is the link: http://webtv.hurriyet.com.tr/2/18119/0/1/iste-o-olum-cihazi.aspx"

What I find interesting is the proposed change in the UK to remove "Sell By" dates (but keep "Best Before" dates). Apparantly the amount of food that is discarded in the UK because it is past its Sell By Date amounts to over £650 per family!!

In relation to the above story I guess it depends on what food is involved - tins of beans will probably be harmless many years after the Sell By Date...
